Webhosting Shootout: UPDATED – Media Temple Down for 5 Hours, 20 Minutes

Just as I was preparing my first post on uptime and response time for my 3 test sites, Media Temple goes down. I’m gonna let this run and see when they realize I’m down.

I’ve been down for 38 minutes now, and normally I’d be all over the Support team, but I don’t want to call Media Temple support just yet. I want to see if and how Media Temple resolves this outage.

I’ve got an ‘Error establishing a database connection’ on my site.

That’s a weird error considering I’m on their GRID hosting, but I guess their MySQL databases are a little less redundant than I’d hoped.

I see that my permanent account website is up and live, so I think it is a problem solely with my db server.

I was first alerted by Pingdom at 1:22am – it’s now 2:14am and nothing’s changed. My site is still down.

Oh this is good! I love downtime to test a hosting company. Come on, Media Temple, you can fix it, I know you can.

But just in case, I’ve got Media Temple’s Support line: (877) 578-4000 24/7 Support

C’mon guys…

UPDATE: Pingdom alerted me that my test site was down at 1:22:54AM and back up at 6:42:54AM. No word yet from Media Temple (it’s now 7:30pm) so I submitted a Support request for them to follow up with me.

Here’s my note:

Hi - my site, a WordPress blog, experienced 5 hours and 20 minutes of downtime last night (http://blog.seo510.com/). The error message on the site was ‘Error establishing a database connection’.

My monitoring alerted me to the problem and I was hoping that your internal monitoring would alert you to the problem, and then that you’d resolve the error quickly.

5 hours 20 minutes is a long time, I’m sure it’s WELL PAST your SLA.

What was the issue?
Why is there no status message or email notification to me about this problem?
How will I be compensated for this downtime?

My monitoring is here:

Charlie
