I’ve had, dare I say it, big success blocking comment spam from my blogs by denying specific IP address ranges.

If you’ve read some of my previous posts on comment spam (Using HTCONF to redirect URLs and block comment spam, Using HTACCESS to block comment spammers and Is APNIC.net a comment spammer haven?) you know I’ve been working very hard to reduce or eliminate this garbage from my sites.

Comment spam is BAD for SEO. If you’re not really anal and diligent about it, search engines will index spam keywords in your site and even rank you for it, and you don’t want that. I’m looking at Google Webmaster tools and I see it for one of my sites – it’s a constant battle.

Up until December 17 I was getting anywhere from 30 to 300 spam comments per night. I had 17 spam comments when I initiated the new blocking that I’m doing. Since then I’ve gotten 15, and only ONE of those was for UGG boots. The rest have been air jordan, MBT shoes, jewelry, flirting, some Bulgarian crap and tibia gold.
