Website Design – Do What You Don’t Hate
On my sites, I use and do what I like, what I respect. I don’t do what I hate, I don’t use things I’m suspicious of.
You know those hover ads that popup a new window when you mouseover them?
I hate those things.
You know those forms that require you to re-enter your email address?
I just hate them.
You know those sites that use popups on their homepage asking you to join their mailing list now?
Ah, you get the idea.
And I don’t have any of those things on any of my sites. They just bother me.
Ever since I built my first site I’ve had one guiding principle: I don’t use what I hate.
I don’t care if everybody does it, I don’t care if it’s a best practice, I don’t care if some guru tells me it will boost my traffic by thousands of visitors – if I cant be proud of what’s on my site I won’t use it. If I can’t look someone in the eye and tell them that this feature or element or article or whatever is kick ass and I love it, well, it’s not on my site.
