Keyword Selection and Targeting

If you want your website to succeed you really need to understand your target keywords. Without it, you’ll work very hard to get search engine traffic.

  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • StumbleUpon
  • Technorati Favorites
  • FriendFeed
  • Delicious
  • LinkedIn
  • Yahoo Buzz
  • Yahoo Bookmarks
  • Google Bookmarks
  • Share/Bookmark

Keyword selection and targeting should be the core of any online business. No page intended to generate traffic through search should be developed or exist without a targeted keyword phrase in mind.

Here’s a few keyword selection and targeting tips for effective search engine optimization.

  • Plan your content with a simple site outline. Ask yourself, what is the purpose of my business? What are my core keywords.
  • As you build out sections your keywords should become more specific. For instance, if your site is about automobiles, your primary keyword is automobiles, and your second level keywords could be sedans, coupes, sports cars, luxury cars, and convertibles.
  • Within each section you want to further break down the categories into subcategories, and finally to content pages.
  • Try to keep your content within 4 levels. 5 or more can become unwieldy.
  • Each content page should represent one keyword, and that page should be the single page representing that keyword on your site.
  • As you write content, ask, what words or phrases would a user search for to find this page of content? You want that keyword to be the main term on that page, but you need supporting words and terms that users will search on to give that page relevance.

Check keywords against search volume metrics to ensure users are searching on those terms.
